Come & Eat!

An introductory Chinese cookbook for the diasporic soul — because home isn't as far as we think. Come & Eat is a cookbook that is not only instructional, but an acknowledgement of my own cultural journey. Chock-full of vivid illustrations, traditionally-inspired design, relatable narratives, & personal anecdotes, food is not the only thing you’ll find here.

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT AT USC ROSKI

Reclaiming and celebrating my Chinese heritage through the cathartic self-care practice of cooking.

Growing up as a second-generation Asian-American, I was barely cognizant of my Chinese background. On a daily basis, it had simply become background noise to me. Despite this, however, food has been an important medium of cultural literacy for me and a huge aspect of reclaiming my Chinese heritage. And while I am not fluent in Mandarin or every tradition in my culture, being literate in the language of Chinese cuisine is comforting because food is such an integral part of every culture.

As you progress through the book, a narrative unfolds through each recipe as I recount my story of coming to love and appreciate my Chinese heritage. Each recipe that I’ve selected also holds meaning, whether it be a traditional dish shared on holidays or simply my favorite thing to make with my mom. Overall, I just wanted to create a book that was full of my own memories, but also something that others could resonate with, all tied in with the intimate process of cooking and eating.
